The People’s Health - Episode 6 - China

EPISODE SYNOPSIS

China has the largest population in the world and the busiest hospitals.

80% of Chinese patients turn up at big hospitals and have to wait sometimes for days to get treatment. With hospitals as profit-making business, the costs are prohibitively high, unsustainable for 1.4 billion people.

With rising living standards and a rapidly ageing society China has a unique challenge of scale: how to provide healthcare to the biggest country in the world.

We go to the frontline of the government's health reform at one of its oldest hospitals - and a pioneering primary health centre, and see how access to doctors are made easier and cheaper, and how government rural insurance scheme has given health coverage to 700 million peasants who had to pay for all their own medical care.
