The Maguire 7

EPISODE SYNOPSIS

The case of the Maguire Seven has been described as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history. Housewife and mother, Annie Maguire, her husband Patrick and her two sons, Vincent (15) and Patrick (13) together with three family friends were all convicted and imprisoned for making bombs – bombs responsible for killing and maiming innocent soldiers and civilians on mainland Britain. A crime that they vehemently denied. The British public wanted them hanged. Despite overwhelming evidence to support their innocence, they all were imprisoned – the police had got their patsys. They all served their entire prison sentences – Patrick spending 4 years in a maximum security adult prison at the age of only 14. After a number of failed legal appeals, their convictions were eventually quashed in 1991 and in 2005 they received a public apology from the then British Prime Minister, Tony Blair. For years the British state denied the truth despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Now, 40 years on, the Maguires, as a family, have come forward to tell their story and hopefully put this nightmare to bed once and for all. They hope that this will never happen to another innocent family.
