Epic Oceans – Episode 2 – Shallow Reef

EPISODE SYNOPSIS

The warming of our planet affects life just beyond the waves too. Eighty percent of corals grow within 15 metres of the surface and coral needs a narrow temperature band to thrive. Today, reefs outside of cooling currents bleach and die, but those tucked within continue to thrive. Clouds of bright yellow snapper hang in the water while blood-red cod hide in the reef, escaping the attention of black-tip reef sharks. Bottlenose dolphin families are also here, hunting for their favourite food: migrating sardines. The surface temperature of the sea needs to drop around two degrees for the sardines to migrate, but that’s not guaranteed now that the planet is warmer.
