‘Bais’ are vast forest clearings located deep within the Congo Basin, the second-largest rainforest in the world. Forest elephants, amongst other local fauna, congregate here to eat, drink and socialise. Every year, using ancient knowledge of migration routes that have been passed through the ages, thousands of elephants return to Dzanga Bai. Their actions create the paths through the forest, disperse its seeds, and keep it fertile.
Through groundbreaking work by the ‘Elephant Listening Project’, researchers are now deciphering the elephant's hidden world of sound. Using acoustic recorders and camera traps, they have uncovered a secret network of communication and have begun compiling an elephant dictionary.
